Going Green

You heard that right! Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is taking a more environmentally friendly route to the future. We are making a few changes to the resort that you should know about.

Plastic Pollution. Did you know that more than 500 million single-use plastic straws are used and thrown away every day in the United States alone? That's a lot of plastic straws! Considering the lightweight of the plastic, those straws (along with other plastic products) sometimes don't make it to the collection systems and in one way or another, end up on our beaches and in our water. As a vacationer of the Gulf Coast, you can imagine this causes a problem. According to a report, if the world continues to improperly dispose plastic, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans. With Sandestin being so close to the coast and the necessity to reduce the plastic pollution problem, as of Monday, August 6th we will no longer be issuing any plastic straws and will be making the switch over to paper straws.

4 tips you can use while on vacation to reduce plastic pollution:

  1. Use a reusable water bottle.
  2. Pack your food in Tupperware containers.
  3. Bring your own shopping bag for the grocery store.
  4. Say no to plastic silverware.Eco Cups

Conserve Water and Energy. The Earth may seem like it has copious amounts of water, but in reality less than 1 percent is available for human use. Resorts, hotels and other lodgings are part of the commercial and institutional facilities group which is responsible for about 17 percent of the withdrawals from US public water systems. That is 17 percent that can easily be reduced by conscious efforts made by both guests and lodging employees. Would you guess that domestic bathrooms and laundry operations total to HALF of the water usage of resorts, hotels and lodgings? That's right, it's not those big swimming pools or hot tubs that the lodgings have, it's those daily tasks that we sometimes don't even think about. Sandestin now has mirror stickers showing what each guest can do to help conserve. If you are wanting to opt out of daily housekeeping services, you may call "77513" on the phone in your room to talk with a Sandestin representative. If your towel is not dirty and you want to help conserve, simply hang it on the door. Towels left on the floor will be cleaned and replaced with new ones.

4 tips you can use while on vacation to conserve water and energy:

  1. Reuse your towels.
  2. Turn off all the lights when you leave your room.
  3. Opt out of daily housekeeping services.
  4. Take shorter showers to limit water consumption.

Overall, the small, new habits that both vacationers and locals do to help the Emerald Coast and the environment all add up. We know this environmentally friendly approach will give Sandestin, our employees and our guests the opportunity to make a difference. Let's all continue to help preserve the environment.
